A Life on the Tatami: My Judo Journey
Judo has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I first stepped onto the mats at just five years old, but like many young athletes, I took a break before rediscovering my passion at 13 years old. That’s when I joined Kitsune-Gari Judo Club, a place that quickly became my second home. Without the belief, dedication, and time invested in me by my senseis—Sensei Gary and Sensei Mick - none of it would have been possible. Their guidance shaped not only my Judo but also my mindset, pushing me to achieve more than I ever thought possible.
After my first competition, I was hooked. The thrill of testing my skills against others, the challenge of constant self-improvement, and the deep respect for the sport kept me coming back. In the early days, I took my fair share of lessons, but with every setback, I pushed harder. Eventually, my dedication paid off - I went on to become a national and international champion in two different weight classes, remaining undefeated for nearly 5 years before retiring from competition around the age of 23.
Even after stepping away from competitive Judo, my love for the sport never faded. I took my Judo Gi with me as I travelled the world, training with judoka from different dojos across the globe. One of the highlights of my journey was training at the Kodokan in Japan, the birthplace of Judo. I also had the opportunity to teach Judo in Australia, sharing my knowledge and experiences with students from all backgrounds.
Through my travels, I absorbed different styles, philosophies, and techniques from judoka worldwide. Now, as a Sensei at Kitsune-Gari Judo Club, I bring that experience and diversity back to the mat, blending traditional Judo with my own unique approach.
Judo is more than just a sport to me - it’s a way of life. It has taught me resilience, discipline, and the invaluable lesson that no matter how many times you fall, you can always get back up. That’s the spirit I aim to pass on to every student who walks through our doors.
Whether you’re a beginner taking your first steps or an experienced fighter looking to refine your skills, I welcome you to join us at Kitsune-Gari Judo Club and experience the journey for yourself.
See you on the tatami! 🥋
