Sensei Mick's Judo Journey:
A Lifetime of Dedication and Excellence

Humble Beginnings & Early Inspiration

Sensei Mick started Judo at 11 years old, mentored by Sensei Roy Inman OBE, a legendary figure in British Judo. Roy, who taught at Mick's school, quickly became a guiding force in his development. Even as Mick progressed his career, he maintained a close connection with his mentor until Roy's passing in 2015. Roy's influence extended beyond the mats, supporting Mick opening his first permanently matted dojo in Milton Keynes and shaping his competitive mindset.

From the very start, Mick was immersed in a judo culture built on discipline, respect, and continuous improvement - values he still upholds today.

A Decorated Competitor

Mick's competitive career is marked by national and international success, proving his skill and dedication to the sport through his fine collection of medals and trophies. Just a few of his notable achievements are:

BJC National Champion - 1994 & 1995
Gold Medal Winner - East of England Open Challenge (U86kg, 1995)
Gold Medal Winner - South of England Championships (U86kg, 1995)
Gold Medal Winner - Dutch European Championships (U86kg, 1996)
Gold Medal Winner - French European Championships (U86kg, 1997)
London International 2002 - Open Challenge Silver Medal Winner, U86kg Bronze Medal Winner

In addition to his competitive judo wins, Mick also excels in Kata, demonstrating his versatility in both the dynamic and technical aspects of the sport. He was the Gold Medal Winner in the Millennium International Kata Championships for Kime-no-kata, a technique performed with live swords, showcasing both precision and discipline.

His 4th Dan was earned through the demanding route of competition Judo, solidifying his expertise in both Randori and Kata.

Beyond Competition: His Evolution to Coach & Mentor

After years of rigorous competition, Sensei Mick transitioned into coaching, bringing his wealth of experience to the next generation of judokas.

Mick's coaching philosophy blends technical precision with the values of respect, discipline and teamwork. He believes that Judo is not just about winning medals, but about building character and passing down the knowledge that was once shared with him. This is why he takes immense pride not only in his personal achievements, but in the success of his students and family.

Commitment to Judo and Martial Arts

Mick's dedication to the martial arts extends beyond Judo. His qualifications include:

Judo: 4th Dan
Ju-Jitsu: 1st Dan
Kendo - 1st Dan
Wushu Karate - Brown Belt
Emergency First Response Instructor

His training with Sensei Hosaka, Kodokan 8th Dan, further deepened his understanding of Judo etiquette, history and philosophy - elements he considers just as important as physical technique in the journey to becoming a black belt.

A Legacy in Judo

Today, Sensei Mick is a respected coach, mentor and role model at Kitsune-Gari Judo Club. He credits the club's success to the team effort of all its dedicated Senseis, ensuring that every student receives the highest standard of training.

His lifelong commitment to Judo continues to inspire judokas of all ages, keeping the spirit of the sport alive for future generations.

For Mick, Judo isn't just a sport. It's a way of life.

And his journey is far from over!

My proudest moment would be getting my black belt but even greater would be seeing my son get his! Now I get to watch my grandchildren follow on with Judo too.

I would love to see them get their black belts!
