Judo fitness is built on full-body functional conditioning, technical precision, and character development, rather than superficial bodybuilding routines.
Mick a 4th Dan instructor, feels that Judo is a complete way of life where true physical preparation cannot be separated from mental discipline. Traditional "gym bro" routines fail on the tatami (mat) because Judo demands a specialized blend of explosive power, core stability, and relentless cardiovascular endurance.
Judo requires both aerobic and anaerobic exercise because a match is a chaotic mix of steady pacing and sudden, high-intensity action like a murmuration of judoka gracefully moving around the tatami then suddenly bursting with power.
The main difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise is how your muscles produce energy: aerobic uses oxygen for continuous activity and instant recovery, while anaerobic breaks down glucose without oxygen for short, explosive bursts and then recovers when breathing returns to normal.
True judo fitness requires moves that force the entire body to work as a single, coordinated machine.
Functional Full-Body Strength
Standard isolation exercises like bicep curls won't help you throw a resisting opponent. Judo fitness relies heavily on compound and functional movements:
Deadlifts & Heavy Squats: essential for building the immense posterior chain and leg power required to drive through a throw.
Overhead Presses: vital for developing the shoulder stability and core control needed to manipulate an opponent's weight.
Functional Loads: training with sandbags, medicine balls, and pull-ups using a thick towel or old Gi jacket replicates the brutal demands of human-to-human grappling.
High-Intensity Anaerobic Endurance
A standard Judo match lasts up to five minutes of near-continuous, explosive exertion. Traditional long-distance jogging doesn't properly prepare the body for this.
Garage HIIT: utilising minimal space for explosive intervals simulates the stop-and-start nature of combat.
Uchikomi Drills: repetitive entry techniques, often done with resistance bands, elevate the heart rate while cementing muscle memory.
Gripping Circuits: forcing athletes to climb thick ropes or cloth materials builds the forearm and hand endurance required to dominate the grip fight.
Bulletproof Mobility & Ukemi
You cannot attack if you cannot survive being thrown.
Breakfalls (Ukemi): practising proper falling techniques acts like a seatbelt for the body. It protects the joints and head from impact, transforming high-amplitude throws into safe, manageable landings.
Safe & Effective Science: modern training principles adapt traditional warm-ups to protect the spine and joints, mixing yoga-style flexibility with sports science to ensure long-term structural health.
Re-Hydration
Drinking too much plain water during exercise can dangerously dilute the sodium levels in your blood, a medical condition known as exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH).
When you sweat, your body loses both water and essential minerals called electrolytes. Replacing that loss entirely with plain water creates a severe chemical imbalance.
Add Electrolytes: If your workout lasts longer than 45 to 60 minutes, skip plain water. Use a sports drink or an electrolyte tablet containing sodium to replenish what you lose in sweat
